14 NPHS students participate in Model UN

The New Prague High School Model UN (United Nations) program has grown from two participants in its first year (1999) to a record 14 this year.

NPHS student Matthew Eldred was the President of the General Assembly and in charge of running the Assembly meetings. He ran for this position last year and won the election. This is his last year in Youth In Government and he has been a very active member, leading the New Prague Delegation with his leadership skills, enthusiasm and elected positions since his sophomore year.

New Prague delegates and their countries are: Jake Schoen, Alex Jankord, Sam Rolli (Slovenia) Mandy VonBank, Katlin Ring, Amanda Ferrazzo (Croatia) Cami Gysland, Drew Smisek, Katie Malecha (Mozambique) Danielle Gravon and Matthew Weldon (Turkey) and Adrianna Jankord and Clara Johnson (Romania)

Advisors were Jen Sayler and Greg Sayler, teachers at the high school. Jen Sayler won the Distinguished Service to Model UN program award which is given out to one advisor each year.

Model UN is a program in which students learn world politics, peaceful resolutions to world issues, conflicting global interests and diplomacy. The delegates represent a country that is researched by the students before they get to the conference. The students spend three days at the St. Paul Radisson. There is always a Diplomat's Banquet on Friday night, in which there is some form of ethnic entertainment. This year it was Japanese Drumming. The speaker was a citizen of Laos who works with a group designed to protect and improve the conditions of children in that country.
