Are you ready for severe weather?

Each year, Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management, in collaboration with the National Weather Service and 16 state and local agencies and organizations sponsors Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. The week is designed to refresh, remind and educate everyone about the seasonal threats from severe weather and how to avoid them.
Each day during the week (April 11-15) different aspects of severe weather is highlighted.
The most important event during Severe Weather Awareness Week are the two annual statewide tornado drills. These drills are scheduled for today (Thursday, April 14) at 1:45 p.m. and 6:55 p.m.
Outdoor warning sirens and NOAA Weather Radios will sound in a simulated tornado warning. The first drill is intended for institutions and businesses. The evening drill is intended for second shift workers and families.
The sirens tend to be taken for granted, but they shouldn’t be. Severe weather can strike quickly, and any warning should be taken seriously. Take the time, when these tornado drills occur, to think about what part of your home or office would be the safest. Make sure your children know where to go if the sirens go off.
