Board expands JH wrestling program, swimming and dance teams

Athletes on the mat, in the pool and on the floor will see some new faces this season as the Tri-City United School Board expanded three of its programs.

Activities Director Jason Myhre presented to the board the addition of the junior high wrestling program and the addition of Le Sueur-Henderson to the TCU Swim and Dance teams.

Myhre said the wrestling program for junior high athletes has no meets for wrestlers in grades 7, 8 and 9. He commented that these students in these grades wrestle at the junior varsity level against opponents who are two to three times older, putting them at a disadvantage. He proposed having those grades be part of the MN 9th Grade and Under Wrestling League. The proposal, which the board approved, will cost the district up to $1,200 for busing and $150 in membership fees.

“Doing this will hopefully encourage more youth to come out for the sport and give those kids who wrestle the chance to be more competitive,” he said.

Myhre also suggested moving the junior high practice meets to the TCU Le Center campus, which will open space in the high school wrestling room.

“There will be more room for everyone,” he said.

Swimming Coop
The board also approved the addition of Le Sueur-Henderson to be part of the TCU Swim Team. Myhre brought the Minnesota State High School League application to the board, saying the LSH requested to coop with TCU for the next two years. He said they have 27 girls interested, and TCU has approximately 10 to 12 swimmers interested.

“The coop will allow for a competitive team and give TCU and LSH girls a chance to compete in swimming,” he wrote in his executive summary.

The team will swim under the Titan name with TCU colors.

Dance Coop
Myhre also expanded the numbers for the TCU Black Diamonds Dance Team when he presented information on Le Sueur-Henderson’s request to coop with the TCU team. He said TCU has approximately nine participants from tryouts, and LSH has 20 girls interested. Having TCU go it alone leaves the competitive team with a very small number.

“Nine dancers is a very small team, considering we compete against teams that have 34 on their High Kick and 26 on Jazz,” Myhre stated.

The board approved the request 7-0.

The team will dance under the TCU name Black Diamonds and use TCU colors.
