Board expected to finalize budget June 28

The New Prague Area School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 28, to approve a budget for the 2010-11 school year.

The district's fiscal year ends June 30, and the district must have a budget approved by that date.

The budget will likely contain no surprises, as most of the cuts and other adjustments to the budget have been discussed at previous meetings.

Daniel Pyan, who recently resigned as finance director to take a similar position with the Winona school district, was at the June 14 workshop to go over aspects of the budget which he had helped craft. He said the budget had projected revenues of approximately $29.9 million and expenditures of $29.1 millions, leaving a fund balance of $797,564, which is close to on target of the board's goal.

The budget assumes an ADM (average daily membership) enrollment of 3,697 students, an increase of about .51 percent.

The budget includes $560,000 in budget reductions, on top of nearly $1 million in reductions that were put in place for the 2009-10 school year. If funding is not increased for the 2011-12 school year, he anticipates the board would need to find an additional $780,000 in cuts next year.

Board member Bob Reed cautioned fellow board members about using the term budget cuts.
