Board nearing figure for levy referendum

Chuck Kajer, Managing Editor

At a workshop on June 14, members of the New Prague Area School Board began to narrow down the amount they will be asking voters for during a November Operating Levy Referendum.

After going over budget figures projected for the next several years, the board prepared a resolution, proposing that the $453 per pupil levy be renewed, and that the authorization of the levy be increased by a maximum of $282 per pupil, bringing the total levy to $735.

The board was initially scheduled to vote on this resolution at its June 18 meeting, but it was removed from the action agenda when board members wanted to reexamine some of the figures and look at whether inflation was taken into account. The proposed levy would be in effect for five years.

Board chair Bob Reed said some of the numbers they had seen at the workshop had taken inflation into account, but he wanted to make sure they had accurate numbers before passing a resolution.

Board member Tom Fadden said, when he first looked at the numbers, his thought was that's a lot of money.

He added But I looked at the district's fund balance in the projections in relation to the overall budget
