Boys back on track with win over Farmington

New Prague High School's boys basketball team defeated Farmington 73-64 Friday, Feb. 26, breaking a 3-game losing streak.

The Trojans (16-9, 7-5 Missota) were scheduled to face Holy Angels Tuesday, March 2. They will close their regular season Friday, March. 5, when they host Shakopee. New Prague will open the Section 1AAA playoffs Wednesday, M

After seeing the lead change hands several times in the first half, New Prague closed strong and had a 9-point lead at halftime.

They extended that led to 13 points in the second half before Red Wing began to whittle away at the Trojan's lead. New Prague led 62-49, but the Wingers outscored the Trojans 19-6 to tie the game at 68-68. They pulled away from New Prague in the final minutes.

Danny Geiger led the Trojans with 25 points, while Cale Girten had 23 and Alex Dittberner 11. Also scoring were Jed Kreuser with 6, Jake Meyer and Nick Gerdes with 4 each, Chase Buthe with 3 and Joe Hatch with 2. Girten had eight rebounds and Danny Geiger seven. Josiah Nunemaker had five assists.

Trojans 73, Tigers 64

New Prague and Farmington had an entertaining and evenly matched game, with both teams hitting high a percentage of shots. The teams traded baskets over a five-minute span midway through the second half, but then a Farmington turnover allowed the Trojans to build a 7-point lead, and the Trojans would later extend that to 11 points for the final margin of victory.

Jed Kreuser's hot hand helped the Trojans to the win. The junior made six of seven from three-point range for a season-high 18 points. Danny Geiger also hit three threes on his way to 27 points. Girten added 14, Alex Dittberner 6, Gerdes 5 and Meyer 3.

Meyer had nine rebounds and Nick Litzau seven. Meyer also had two blocked shots.
