Boys hockey, girls hoops open seasons Tuesday

The New Prague Trojan boys hockey and girls basketball teams will open the season Tuesday, Dec. 1, with both teams playing non-conference games on the road.

The girls basketball team will open the season at Austin against the host Packers. New Prague returns three starters - Maggie Weiers, Hannah Strop and Rena Kneeland - from the team that placed third at last year's State Class AAA Tournament.

The Trojans have two more road games, at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, against Eastview and at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, against Class A power Barnum at Hopkins in the Pacesetter Tip-off Classic, before they host Waconia on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Auxiliary Gym at New Prague High School.

Coach Ron Gunderson is beginning his 34th season at the helm of the New Prague program.

New Prague's boys hockey team will open its season under coach Chris Lonke at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at New Ulm. The Trojans will play at Mankato East at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, before hosting Faribault at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

The Trojans were 18-9 last season and will be looking to find some players to step up and find the net. The Trojans lost their top three scorers from last season.

The Trojan gymnastics team will have its first meet Friday, Dec. 4, at Breck. Their first home meet is Tuesday, Dec. 8, against Lakeville North.

New Prague's wrestling team opens its season Saturday, Dec. 5, hosting the New Prague Invitational beginning at 10 a.m.

The boys basketball team hosts Austin Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the Main Gym for its season opener.

The Trojan Adapted Floor Hockey team started practice this week. Their first game is Monday, Jan. 11, at Owatonna. Their first home game is Tuesday, Jan. 19, against Hudson, WI.
