Boys hockey team tops Shakopee, loses 2

New Prague/Montgomery-Lonsdale’s boys hockey team ended a six-game winless streak by defeating Shakopee 7-4 at Shakopee Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The Trojans hadn’t won a game since beating the Sabers January 7 in New Prague, handing them their first loss of the season. Since then, both teams have struggled. The Trojans lost four of the next six games, one in overtime, and tied two others in between the two wins.

NP/ML was scheduled to play at Hutchinson Tuesday, Feb. 7. Their next game will be at Farmington Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Trojans 7, Sabers 4

With Shakopee’s starting goalie out with an illness, the Trojans took advantage of his inexperienced backup by scoring four first period goals.

The Sabers scored first, but Mark Kramer tied the game at 3:06, with assists from Ryan Witty and Matt Perkinson. Witty scored again just two minutes later, from Colton Borwege, and Nate Thomas made it 3-1 with a goal from Tyler Lapic and Bryce Bartelt, at 8:56.

After another Saber goal, Witty got his second of the night on the power play at 14:48, from Lapic and Bartelt. Shakopee would get one more in the final seconds of the period.

New Prague made it 5-3 with a shorthanded goal by Witty at 14:47. Shakopee scored on a power play just 26 seconds later, and it was 5-4 going into the third.

The Trojans scored two goals in the final period, with Borwege scoring from Darrin Rezac and Witty at 11:27, and Witty getting an empty net goal, unassisted, at 16:44.

Kevin Cassidy was in goal for the Trojans and stopped 28 of 32 to claim the win. Shakopee outshot NPML 32-23.

Cougars 6, Trojans 5

The Trojans got on the board first against Mankato East, with Borwege scoring, from Lapic and Ryan Duede, on a power play at 2:38.

But East, looking for some payback for the 6-0 loss at the hands of the Trojans in December, fired back with three goals in the next seven minutes and took a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

Perkinson opened the second period with a power play at 2:41, with Lapic and Kramer getting assists. East made it a two-goal lead again with a goal less than two minutes later.

The Cougars appeared to put the game away in the third, scoring twice and leading 6-2 with 9:44 remaining. But the Trojans went on the offensive and scored three times in the game’s final 5:20. Lapic scored from Brad Bastyr at 13:40, Borwege scored from Witty and Rezac at 15:03 and Nate Raabe scored from Lapic and Thomas at 16:09. That was as close as the Trojans would make it, though, as the Cougars held on for the win.

East outshot the Trojans 28-23. Cassidy took the loss for the Trojans, with Palma coming on in relief. The Trojans had 17 saves.
