Boys take 3rd at True Team section meet

The New Prague Trojan boys track and field Team produced its best-ever finish since moving up to Class AAA three years ago.

The Trojans finished third in the Section 1AAA meet at Lakeville North High School on Tuesday, May 10. Lakeville South won the meet with 1,118.5 points, Lakeville North was second at 910.5 and New Prague had 886.

The rest of the field included Owatonna (805.5), Rochester Century (745), Farmington (695), Rochester John Marshall (660.5), Austin (540), Rochester Mayo (527) and Northfield (459.5).

In True Team Track, each team is allowed three entries per event (one entry for relays) and each competitor earns points based on their performance. With 10 teams in the section and 30 entries per event, the first place finisher earned 30 points, second place 29, etc.

"The meet format is a true test of team strength," Coach Nick Meyer said. "While we have seen the ability of our top athletes to score points, today showed that the Trojans have the depth to compete at the highest levels too."

Meyer said the team’s focus was a key factor over the course of the seven-hour meet. "While this was a good meet for the team, we know that we have our best performances ahead at the WCC Championships and Section 2AA Championships that are approaching."

Among the top performances by the Trojans: • The 4x800 team of Steve Kvam, Mark Picha, Jack Siegle and Justin Gregor set the tone for the Trojans early in the meet with a third place finish. Kvam, Picha and Siegle went on to score big points in the 800m and 4x400 as well. • Caleb Smith set a PR (personal record) in the 200 m and competed very well in three sprints. • Eric Chromy set a PR in the 300 hurdles and pole vault and competed very well in all four events. • Alex Torp set a PR in the 300 hurdles and broke his own school record in the PV.

The Trojans had the top finisher in three events: —Wyatt Midtvedt in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 33.13 seconds) — Austin Greenwalt in the long jump (20 feet, 2.5 inches) —Alex Torp in the pole vault (14-9) The Trojans had 20 entries finish in the top third of their events, while only six finished in the bottom third.
