Braiths and Pint receive Red Cross Hero Awards

Montgomery residents Russ and Jenny Braith, and Lonsdale resident Greg Pint were honored with the 2016 American Red Cross Good Samaritan Heroes Award in Minnesota for putting their own lives at risk to save a man from a dangerous car accident.

Last October, Russ and Jenny were on the way to work and saw a car had gone into a pond. Noticing someone was still in the sinking car, Jenny called 911 and Russ flagged down Greg Pint who had a metal bar in his truck bed. Together they broke the submerged car’s window to free the driver,  Larry Stavos of Lonsdale, just in time.

“This man is alive because of citizens who weren’t afraid to step up and be heroes when help is needed,” said Melanie Tschida, Executive Director of the American Red Cross serving Southeast Minnesota.

The Braiths were honored at the 8th annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on Friday, May 6. Greg Pint was unable to attend, but will receive his award at a later date. The Good Samaritan Hero Award, sponsored by CenterPoint Energy, is presented to an individual who displays courage and caring upon encountering an unusual, significant, or unexpected incident.

To hear the Braiths tell the story, pick up the May 12 Montgomery Messenger or The New Prague Times.

The Heroes Breakfast also raises funds for the lifesaving programs and services of the Minnesota Region of the American Red Cross. To donate, visit redcross.org/mn.
