A chance to be heard!

After this week’s primary election and with next week’s filing deadline for local races, we are entering the final stretch for what has proven to be a long and interesting election season.

Three months from now (hopefully) we will have selected a new president, members of Congress and the Legislature, judges, county commissioners and city officials.

The Times will do its best to keep our readers informed on who is running and some of the issues that are part of the local elections. Part of that obligation is running Letters to the Editor endorsing candidates and discussing the issues that voters need to consider when entering the voting booth.

The number of letters we have received in past elections is mind staggering. In past years, before the advent of email, the folders holding the letters would be bursting at the seams. We cannot publish all of the letters we receive, and we do try to balance them among the different candidates.

As in the past, we do have some restrictions on candidate letters. These restrictions include:

• Letters must be 250 words or less. (shorter than the normal 300 word limit) •We do not publish letters from candidates or their immediate family. (They are welcome to run an ad).

• We cannot run all letters we receive, and we reserve the right to edit letters. Preference is given to letters on local or area races or from local readers.

• Letters can be submitted by individuals or small groups of no more than three people.

• Letters should be unique to each newspaper. Form letters will not be published.

• We do not run letters in the issue immediately preceding an election.

• Letters must include a daytime phone number for contact information. We will call to confirm before running a letter.

• Our deadline for Letters to the Editor during the election season is noon on Monday for that week’s edition.

The Times encourages readers to become involved in the election process and make their opinions known.
