Construction projects keep schools busy

The students are gone, but there’s plenty of action going on at the New Prague Area Schools buildings this summer.

This summer will mark the final few months of building projects that resulted from a bond referendum passed by school district voters in 2015. After months of planning, work began on the various projects early in 2016. While some work has been completed, including the district office and community education offices at the CEC and middle school classroom projects, other projects are ongoing and some had to wait until the end of the 2016-17 school year.

Among the projects scheduled for this summer:

CEC building

• Demolition of the 1923 school building. In its place will be a parking and bus lane and an entrance to the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) area on the southwest side of the CEC building. The building was vacated last week and asbestos abatement has been completed, according to District Operations Director Craig Most. He said demolition of the structure is tentatively set to begin June 14.

• Completion of remodeling to the classrooms on the south side of the CEC building. Upper level classrooms will be used by the ECFE program, while lower level classrooms will house the school district’s Operations department. The Operations department vacated the 1923 building last week, in preparation for demolition. Completion of the loading dock on the northwest corner of the building will be completed about June 19, Most said.

• Completion of the Aquatics Center, built on the northeast side of the building, is nearing and the new facility is scheduled to open July 1.
