Council approves street work minus sidewalks

At its Tuesday meeting, the New Prague City Council unanimously approved the 2007 street reconstruction project, minus sidewalks, along Lexington Avenue N.

There were 18 people at the public hearing on the street work, which includes Lexington Avenue from Second Street NE to Scott County State Aid Highway CSAH 37 (Seventh Street NE) and two cul-de-sacs, Liberty Lane and Gooseberry Lane. Most residents from those areas voiced opposition to the proposed sidewalks.

Doug Parrott of Short Elliott Hendrickson (S.E.H.), Inc., consulting engineers, presented information for the street project. The work will include improvements to the sanitary sewer, water main, water services, storm sewer, curb and gutter, aggregate base, bituminous surfacing and sidewalks. Lexington Avenue, from Second Street to just before Fifth Street, would be completed reconstructed. Because services are still in relatively good shape on the rest of the street and in the two cul-de-sacs, only those portions in most need of repair would be included.

Parrot said the estimated cost of the project is $1.3 million. On Gooseberry Lane and Liberty Lane, the street rehabilitation and curb and gutter repair has estimated assessments of $3,360 for residential units. On Lexington Avenue, the residential assessments are estimated at $7,146.

According to the proposed plan, the sidewalks would have gone from Second Street NE to CSAH 37. The sidewalks would have started on the west side of Lexington Avenue at Second Street, crossing to the east at the intersection with Third Street NE and going back to the west at the intersection with Fifth Street NE.

Tony Brezina, a resident on Lexington, said he didn't see many people in favor of sidewalks at a neighborhood meeting. He felt the area was safe enough not to include a sidewalk.

I can't babysit that sidewalk
