Council approves upcoming events for city parks

The New Prague City Council approved three events to be held in Memorial Park during the summer. The actions came at its April 18 meeting.

The Park Board unanimously recommended the events, one for Calvary Church and two for the New Prague Chamber of Commerce.

Calvary Church City Planning Director Ken Ondich explained Calvary Church in New Prague is proposing a free public event on Thursday, July 28, from 5-10 p.m. The event will include food vendors, guest speakers and a live concert. While the church has held smaller events in the park in the past, organizers are expecting between 400 to 700 people to attend this year’s celebration.

Since it will take place during a weeknight, city staff recommended that the live music and PA system use end by 9 p.m. Calvary Church had proposed having a stage set up in one of the two ball fields in Memorial Park. Ondich said it was recommended that the ball fields not be used, instead the area near where the horseshoe pits and volleyball courts be used for the staging and crowds.

Council member Jenna Tuma asked if there would be enough parking for the crowd. Ondich didn’t think there would be an issue since the event would be held in the evening when there should be enough parking and the crowd size was an estimated number.

The council approved the celebration with 11 conditions.
