Council holds Truth in Taxation hearing

The New Prague City Council held its Truth in Taxation hearing on Monday with 10 people attending the annual meeting.

The Truth in Taxation law requires most city and county governments and school districts to hold a hearing before approving their annual property tax levy. During the hearing there must be a presentation of the current year's budget and public discussion.

New Prague City Administrator Mike Johnson made a presentation of how the property taxes are determined. He also noted that residents' 2009 proposed tax rate is down significantly from the earlier initial notice that residents received.

Cities have to establish a preliminary levy in September and property owners are then notified. After the Truth in Taxation hearing, the city has to set a final levy for property taxes that will be collected in 2009. That levy can be the same as the original figure or less, but cannot go up.

Johnson explained that the initial budget was approximately $3.6 million. A resident with a $204,507 house would have seen an increase of about $87 for their tax impact.

We knew that was too high
