County OKs expansion of Kamp Dels at Waterville

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for a 31-site expansion of an existing campground, Kamp Dels, in Waterville Township, during the regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The application, recommended for approval by the Le Sueur County Planning Commission and Zoning Commission, was submitted by Tobin Pope, Waterville (applicant), and Kamp Dels-Pope Properties, Waterville (owner). The campground is located on Lake Sakatah in Waterville Township.

The planning commission held a public hearing on September 12 in order to hear public testimony from the applicants as well as interested parties, after which approval was recommended.

The county board also adopted findings of fact regarding the application by the Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (MMPA) for a CUP to establish a silage stockpile in Sharon Township. Based on the findings of fact, the CUP was denied.

The board also:

• Following presentation by Craig Soupir of DNR Fisheries at Waterville, approved purchase by DNR of over 1,000 feet of shoreline (1.8 acres of the Scheffert Tract) on Lake Volney for approximately $18,000. Soupir said the purchase would protect the 1,000 feet of entirely wooded shoreline from potential development.

• On recommendation of Building and Grounds Director Jim McMillen, approved alarm system in the courthouse from Technical Solutions of Madison Lake for $13,676. McMillen said employees have been inquiring for some time about having alarm buttons to notify the sheriff’s office if there would be a problem.
