County Road 2 work to begin Monday

By Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

Beginning Monday, Aug. 18, crews will be reconstructing a portion of Scott County Road 2 in Elko New Market.

Scott County Engineer Mitch Rasmussen of the county's Public Works Department said the work will start near Church Street and go west. The road will be reconstructed through the downtown area and will include some city work such as a new sidewalk, installing of a new water main and pedestrian bump outs. The project is estimated at $3.7 million.

Rasmussen explained the project won't be completed this year as the design process and the obtaining of a right of way took time. Crews will work as far west as they can before the weather puts a stop to the project.

Work will resume the following construction season. The project will continue ending at Idaho Avenue, an undeveloped road on the west end of the city.

Rasmussen noted the work for this summer will be staged so traffic can get around the construction. Also, parking will be allowed only on the north side of the street during part of the project. He expected they will have to create a detour during part of the work.

Part of the project also includes repairs to a portion of County Road 2 that was done two years ago. The road in front of Elko New Market City Hall cracked after its first winter.

Rasmussen said the county has a testing firm examining the area to find the reason for the failure of the road. After they have determined the problem, they will come up with a solution for fixing the area.

The entire project is scheduled to be done by late June, 2009.
