Czech Emporium liquor license approved

Chuck Kajer, Managing Editor

The New Prague City Council approved a liquor license for a new business in the downtown area but it could be at least a year before the business is up and running.

The council held a public hearing and then approved the application for a license from Czech Emporium, LLC. The business is owned by Caroline Amplatz of Golden Valley, who plans to build a hotel/restaurant/event center at land she has purchased at 222 West Main Street. The vacant lot is immediately west of Schumacher's Hotel and Grille 212.

Amplatz had been the apparent winning bidder for the Schumacher Hotel building when it was sold at an auction several years ago, after owners John and Kathleen Schumacher had closed the business. She later backed out of the purchase agreement and Schumachers eventually remodeled the hotel and reopened it last year.

Amplatz' architect, Gary Nyberg, was at Monday's council meeting to discuss the proposed business during the public hearing. Nyberg showed the council conceptual drawings of the building, which would have a full kitchen, dining room, dance floor and hotel rooms. The drawings were labeled New Prague Event Center
