D-R-S Red Division 2013 Preview

Union Hill Bulldogs The Bulldogs are coming off one of their best D-R-S seasons in history, finishing with a 21-2 record, 28-7 overall. The team qualified for the State Tournament for the first time since 2007.

Adam Gill takes over as interim manager for the Bulldogs this season, Andrew Weiers will continue as a coach for the team, which placed first in the Red Division last year.

Three of last year’s players not on this year’s roster are player/ manager Brian Giesen (retired), Derek Masberg (to Waterville) and Erik Olson. Nate Sticha, Danny Beckius and Danny Feneis have been added to the roster.

The Bulldgos have a deep pitching staff, led by Brad Weiers, Rick Bell, Matt Beckius and Jon Solheid. At the plate, look for Tony Kubes, Beckius, Jesse Bastyr and Adam Gill to provide firepower.

Weiers and Tyler Busch will handle catching duties, as Eric Bisek takes a year off from the team. Infielders include Conrad Masberg, Gill, Ben Trewartha, Jeff Dietz, Tom Giesen and Weiers, while Bastyr, Adam Giesen, Jon Beckius and Solheid will be in the outfield.

The Bulldog manager lists Faribault, Montgomery, St. Benedict, Prior Lake, New Market, St. Patrick and New Prague as the teams to beat in league play.

The Bulldogs are coming off one of the best seasons in team history, but the season was cut short by a disappointing first round loss in the state tournament. With most of their key players back, look for Union Hill to try to top last year’s success.

The team has scheduled an exhibition game against the Shakopee Indians May 10 at Shakopee and will play in the Belle Plaine Tiger Town Classic June 7-9.

Faribault Lakers The Lakers are managed by Charlie Lechtenberg, with Ryan Archambault as the assistant.

The team loses Nate Rost, who is playing for New Market, and picks up Nathan Mediger.

Top player for the Lakers include Archambault, Evan Knutson and Joey Grote. Knutson, Alex Olson, Jack Helgeson and Matt Stocker lead the pitching staff, with Danny Pierce and Jimmy Roberts handling catching duties.

Top hitters include Archambault and Jay Ellerbusch. In the infield, Adam Kline, Grote, Archambault and Stocker will be the top players, with Helgeson, Eddie Gillen and Ellerbusch in the outfield.

Lechtenberg rates Union Hill, St. Patrick and St. Benedict among the top D-R-S teams. He says, “We have a young team and a lot of guys returning this year. We hope to advance farther into the palyoffs and make a state appearance this year.”

Montgomery Mallards Mark Worm returns to manage the Mallards, and he will be assisted by his sons, Nick and Phil. The Mallards are coming off an 11-19 overall record last year.

Worm doesn’t anticipate many roster changes this season. Top returning players include Mike and Tom Flicek, John Krocak, Eric Iverson, and Nick and Phil Worm.

Top pitchers will be Rob Worm, Robbie Marschall and Krocak. Mike Flicek, Iverson and Rob Damato will handle the catching duties.

Top hitters will be Ryan Worm, Mike Flicek, Iverson, Phil Worm and Steve Rosier. Infielders include Marschall, Ryan Worm, Tom Flicek, Krocak, Nick Worm, Phil Worm and Rosier. In the outfield, the Mallards will have Rosier, Mike Kocina, Iverson, Dave Simon and Kyle Kubes.

“It will be an interesting year,” said Mark Worm. “We’ll have a different lineup every night due to work schedules and assorted obligations.” He said all 11 home games will be promotion nights and the team will work to make games a fanfriendly environment.

Webster Sox Mike Sandmann returns as manager and will be assisted by Jason Nelson.

The team did not submit a response to a preseason questionaire.

Elko Express Elko will again compete in Class B this year, but will play a partial DRS schedule, facing each team once.

Terry Fredrickson returns as manager, with Mike Christenson as the assistant.

The team loses Zack Braun, who is playing in the Northwoods League this year. New players on the squad are Will Lundquist, Adam Alexander, Joel Klinkhammer and Tyler Brekke.

Top returning players are Ash Larsen, Kyle Kraska, TJ Evanson and Dylan Thomas.

Top pitchers are Glenn Parker, John Hayes, Lundquist, Klinkhammer and Ryan Van Dusen.

At the plate, top players are Jason Grimm, Larsen, Kroska, and Evanson.

Corey Grisim and John Parker will handle catching duties.

Top infielders are Kyle Kalina and Gordan Kappers, while Garret Dalich and Thomas will be in the outfield.

Top teams in the league, according to Fredrickson, are New Market, Prior Lake, St. Benedict and New Prague.
