A dog’s day at state show

James Herriot, author of “All Creatures Great and Small” wrote, “Dogs like to obey. It gives them security.”

If this is true, then a lot of dogs in Le Sueur County were secure with their owners at the annual Minnesota 4-H Dog Show held September 24 to 26. The annual event is held in the fall after the Minnesota State Fair and consists of 4-H members and their dogs competing in agility, obedience, showmanship or rally events.

Youth and their canine companions in several 4-H clubs in the county earned 16 champion ribbons and plaques, six reserve champion ribbons and two 1st Award of Excellence awards at this year’s show.

David Foley, Le Sueur County 4-H Program Coordinator said the large number of awards earned by Le Sueur County Youth was due to the great programs in the county and the trainer who worked with the youth.

“We had a really great program this year. Our county trainer (Kayla Dohmen) introduced some new techniques and tips to the 4-H youth this year which helped them progress with their training, not only at designated training nights, but at home as well,” he said. “Kayla did a great job relating to our 4-H'ers and their families. We also have a very active and dedicated Dog Project Development Committee that works year-round to provide educational opportunities for all of the exhibitors.”
