Elko Speedway continues drive to merge licenses

There was quite a bit of discussion concerning Elko Speedway’s request to combine its liquor licenses at the Elko New Market City Council’s Thursday, Oct. 27, meeting. In the end the council’s direction to city staff was to sit down with representatives of the speedway and work out some of the details.

City Attorney Andrea Mc- Dowell Poehler of the firm Campbell Knutson explained that the original ordinance with the business having two liquor licenses is based on the track, due to it being an open air venue, getting special legislation from the Minnesota Legislature for its license. The separate liquor license for Champions Bar was approved as it was believed it would be operated as a year round restaurant or banquet facility.

City Administrator Tom Terry said that Tom Ryan, owner of Elko Speedway, was asking the council if it was open to the change for the liquor licenses.

“I’m of the mind, a single license makes sense,” said council member Trish Timmons.
