Elsie Beckius, 70

Elsie M. Beckius, 70, a lifelong resident of the New Prague area, died on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague.

Born in Cedar Lake Township on September 9, 1933, Elsie Beckius was a daughter of William and Rose (Mahowald) Svoboda. She attended Scott County District School #48, Most Holy Trinity Catholic School in Veseli, and New Prague High School.

Her marriage to Robert Beckius took place on October 1, 1952, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in New Market. She was employed in housekeeping at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague for 25 years. Elsie was a member of St. Wenceslaus Council of Catholic Women, Helena Helpers Homemakers Group, and was a volunteer at St. Wenceslaus School.

Elsie is survived by her children, Steven Beckius, Shakopee, Marty (Pam) Beckius, Jordan, Michael (Katie) Beckius, Webster, Thomas (Sarah), Belle Plaine, Linda (Roger) Smisek, New Prague, Roger (Barb) Beckius, New Prague, and Laurie (Al) Dietz, New Prague; 18 grandchildren; brother, William (Bernadine) Svoboda, New Prague; sister, Theresa (Lanny) Holzer, Jordan; brothers-in-law, Dennis Hanks, Kilkenny, and Ivan (Ruth) Beckius, Little Rock, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert, on October 19, 1996, daughter-in-law, Debbie Beckius, and a sister, Rita Hanks.

The funeral was held at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague on Monday, July 19 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. George Freeman officiating.

Pallbearers were Chad, Kimberly, Chaz, Jacob and Jon Beckius, Drew Smisek and Jeff Dietz. Honorary casketbearers were Stephanie Bendzick, Jamie, Jill, Dustin, Hannah, Matthew, Molly and Danny Beckius, Connor Smisek, and Katie and Anna Dietz.

Interment was at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in New Prague.

Visitation was held at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
