Extra snow days won’t be made up
New Prague Area Schools Superintendent Larry Kauzlarich told members of the New Prague School Board, during its April 22 meeting, that he would not recommend making up the last two days of school that were cancelled due to April snowstorms.
Five class days have been missed this year, four due to snow and one caused by the shooting hoax on March 20. The district has already revised the calendar, making Friday, May 10, a student contact day instead of a teacher workshop day, but since making that change the district has had two additional snow days. Kauzlarich said he initially wanted to add more days to the calendar, but felt it would not be feasible this year.
The two “lost days” won't hurt the district financially, since state funding is based on hours and not days, and the district has already exceeded the minimum amount of time required by the state.
Kauzlarich suggested the board add some flexibility in future calendars so that more snow days could be made up if it becomes necessary.
