Family donates park swing in honor of daughter

A special ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Wagner Park in Elko New Market on Saturday, Aug. 27, as the Ben and Stephanie Luebbert family, their relatives and friends gathered to dedicate a combination bench and swing. The bench was in memory of the Luebbert’s daughter Katie Marie, who would have been 10 years old this year. Katie was born on September 13, 2006 with Trisomy 18 and lived three days. Trisomy 18 is a cell condition that can cause problems in development and can result in stillbirths or short life spans. Katie’s sisters and cousins frequently play at Wagner Park and friends and family of the Luebberts donated funds for the purchase and installation of the swing bench at the park to celebrate Katie’s 10th birthday. Mark Nagel, Assistant City Administrator of Elko New Market, said the Luebbert family approached the city in April about the swinging bench. The cost for the swing bench was $1,230. Shari Luebbert, Lead Pastor of Tapestry Vineyard Church and Ben’s mom, created a private Facebook page inviting friends and family of Ben and Stephanie to contribute money toward the swing.
