Fifth graders learn election process with sweet vote

Fifth graders at Falcon Ridge Elementary School in New Prague learned about the election process through a candy bar election. As the teachers said, "This was a great year to teach and role play about the election process." To do this they found and developed a 10 day unit that took Falcon Ridge students through the steps of the election process. To begin the process they held local primaries and caucuses in each classroom. This was a great opportunity to teach students the difference between a primary and a caucus. The next step was to hold a grade level meeting which acted as a national primary. At this event, students presented videos, songs, raps and cheers to help persuade other fifth graders to vote for their candy. After the national primary election, six candies were narrowed down to three.
