Fire Department has a busy week

The New Prague Fire Department was busy last week.

On Tuesday evening, Nov. 22, the department was called to the New Prague Memorial Park baseball field, where the ticket booth had been set on fire. Damage was confined to the ticket booth area, and police are investigating the suspected arson.

On Thanksgiving morning, at about 10 a.m., the department was called to a fire in the area above Jimmy’s Pizza, on East Main Street. Authorities suspect a cigarette ignited a sofa in the upstairs area, which a band had been using for practice. The band’s instruments were destroyed, and there was smoke and water damage to the building, including furniture, flooring and roof joists.

The building is owned by Randy and Bev Sauer. Firefighters from New Prague and Jordan responded, and firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to an adjacent building. They were on the scene for about 2 1/2 hours.

Damage to the pizza restaurant was minimal, and Jimmy’s Pizza was open for business by Friday.

On Friday, the department was dispatched to a garage fire on First Ave. NW, where the garage and its contents were destroyed. The call came in about 4 a.m., and the garage was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

Finally, on Monday, about 11:45 a.m., the department was called to a fire on Circle Drive, in the Eastwood Acres development. Electrical lines rubbing against a tree had ignited the tree. Firefighters had to wait for a crew from Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative to shut off power before they could put out the fire. They were called to the scene again several hours later when the fire reignited.
