Firefighters battle grass fire for more than two hours

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

The New Prague Fire Department battled a grass fire southwest of New Prague for two and-a-half hours on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Firefighters received a call reporting the fire around 10:55 a.m. According to New Prague Fire Chief Jim Becker, it apparently started in a woodpile at the Craig Westphal farm. A strong wind caused the flames to jump a slough, where they landed in a neighbor's field and burned through corn stubble.

Becker said it's not known how the fire started, although it's possible some ashes that had been dumped from a fireplace were blown into the woodpile causing the fire.
