Floor hockey team advances to state

New Prague defeated Wayzata/Minnetonka 9-5 Wednesday, March 10, to qualify for the State CI Adapted Floor Hockey Tournament, which will be held this weekend at Bloomington Jefferson High School.

The Trojans (7-6) are the No. 4 seed from the South and will take on the No. 1 team from the North Division, Anoka-Hennepin (12-0).

That game is at 5 p.m. Friday, March 19.

Other first round games include Dakota United vs. Maple Grove at 6:30 p.m., St. Cloud Area vs. South Suburban at 8 p.m. and Owatonna vs. Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville, also at 8 p.m.

Win or lose, the Trojans play again on Saturday, March 20. If they lose, they play at 9 a.m. in the consolation round, If they win they play at noon in the semifinals.

Consolation championship game is at 1:45 p.m., third place is at 3:30 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Trojans 9, Lakers 4

New Prague kept the pressure on Wayzata/Minnetonka throughout the game and eventually overcame an early lead to defeat the Lakers 9-4 to earn its first ever trip to the state tournament.

The Lakers scored early in the game, but Phillip Weber tied it at 1-1 on an assist from Matthew Schoenbauer.

Wayzata again took the lead, but the Trojans scored two straight goals to take the lead. Anna Busch put in a rebound and then Adam Jeurissen scored on an assist from Busch.

Wayzata tied the game at 3-3, but Schoenbauer put the Trojans up for good with a goal, on an assist from Busch and the Trojans led 4-3 after one period.

Jeurissen and Schoenbauer upped the Trojan lead to 6-3 in the second. Wayzata scored a late goal to make it 6-4 after two.

But the Trojans would score three goals in the third to put the game away. Jeurissen and Schoenbauer had unassisted goals and then Eric Johnson scored, on an assist from Alex Palma, to complete the scoring.

Schoenbauer, Jeurissen and Busch were the offensive stars for the game for New Prague. Schoenbauer had three goals and an assist and Busch had a goal and three assists. Jeurissen added three goals.

New Prague's Marcus Schoenbauer had a solid game, making 21 saves. New Prague outshot the Lakers 35-25.
