Generation Building Center to help a friend fight cancer

The staff at Generation Home & Building Center in Lonsdale is lending a helping hand to Braden Flicek, 6, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a childhood form of cancer that develops in nerve tissue. They are hosting a Boss Joe’s Brats with J&M’s Lemonade fundraiser at Generation Home & Building Center, 601 Central St. E, Lonsdale, on Friday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help the family with expenses related to Braden’s illness.

Braden is the son of Craig and Kristen Flicek, New Prague, and a true fighter, recently completing an intense round of chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant on July 4. After 26 days at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, Braden’s latest scans came back clear and he was finally able to return home on Sunday, July 21, to recover and return to living the life of a six-year-old.

Generation Home & Building Center Manager Carmen Kraska explained that as friends of the family, she and her younger brother Joseph, 9, wanted to do something special to help them out. Joseph, son of Emil and Rhonda Kraska, garnered help from his cousins Jackson, 7, and Milo, 4, sons of Paul and Cassy Simon, to raise money for Braden and his family.

As it goes in small towns, there were additional connections to the Flicek family at Generation Home & Building Center. Carmen works at the store with Jackson and Milo’s mother Cassy, and Braden’s great-aunt, Ginny Flicek. As a group, they came up with the idea of hosting Friday’s fundraiser.

“We wanted to figure out a way to do something for this family,” Carmen said. “They are a great family, and to have this happen to them hit close to home for us. It’s so sad and hard to imagine what they’ve been through these past six months.”

She said the boys especially wanted to help Braden because he hasn’t been able to have all the fun they’ve experienced this summer.

“Everyone at the building center is so excited,” she stated, adding that they will also have a bean bag toss and a lucky duck pond, in addition to live coverage from KCHK from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“I want to thank Fred’s IGA Foods in Lonsdale and the Lonsdale Country Market for their support with the hotdog buns and brats for our event,” Carmen stated, saying how much they appreciate being able to keep costs down to give more to the family.

If you’re unable to attend the event and would like to donate to the Braden Flicek family, contact Carmen at Generation Home & Building Center at 507-744-3120.
