German students are enjoying their stay in New Prague

By Patrick Fisher

The middle of the first trimester at New Prague High School means its time for parent conferences, but for two exchange students it means their time in New Prague is nearly done.

Florian Braun and Kirstin Lederer, exchange students from Germany, will leave for home around November 8 after staying with host families and attending classes at New Prague High School since the beginning of the school year. The two arrived in New Prague on August 22 as part of the Minnesota Baden-Wurttemberg Student Exchange Program.

This is the 25th year of the program, sponsored by Minnesota German teachers through their professional organization, the American Association of Teachers of German. In the German State of Beden-Wurttemberg it is coordinated by the International Student Exchange Office of Oberschulamt Stuttgart, a school authority.

The purpose of the program is to have students strengthen their skills in a foreign language, improve their understanding of another culture and to help students develop maturity and independence.

While in New Prague Braun has been staying with Trevor Murchison and his family and Lederer has been staying with Allison May and her parents.

Everything is bigger here. There is much more space between the homes
