Girls have late game woes

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team had trouble down the stretch in a pair of close Wright County Conference basketball games last week. New Prague led for most of both games, but let the lead slip away in losing to Hutchinson and Waconia.

The Trojans (7-13, 1-4 WCC) were scheduled to face Eden Prairie Tuesday, Jan. 30. They will be at home Friday, Feb. 2, to take on Holy Family Catholic.

Tigers 67, Trojans 64 New Prague led by as many as 11 points in the second half of their game against Hutchinson, but turnovers proved to be a problem as they allowed Hutchinson back into the game in a 67-64 loss Tuesday, Jan. 23.

New Prague shot 53 percent and Hutchinson shot just 36 percent. New Prague had a 37-32 advantage in rebounds.

But New Prague committed 27 turnovers and that led to 33 points for the Tigers as they came from behind for the win. Amanda Giesen led the Trojans with 17 points, while McKenzie Holgate had 15 and Emily Russo 12. Also scoring for New Prague were Emily Schmitz (7), Makayla Shimek (6), Sally Traxler (5) and Brooke Buthe (2). Russo grabbled 11 rebounds for a double-double and had four assists and four blocked shots for the Trojans. Giesen had seven rebounds and four assists and Emily Schmitz had five assists.

Wildcats 56, Trojans 54 New Prague led by as many as eight points in the second half of their game with Waconia Friday, Jan. 26, but again couldn’t.....
