Girls hockey team wins Missota opener

The New Prague Trojan girls hockey team defeated Holy Angels 3-1 in their Missota Conference opener Thursday, Nov. 29, and also defeated Litchfield/Dassel- Cokato on Saturday to go to 6-3 on the season. The Trojans will face three Section 1A foes in the coming week, hosting Faribault Friday, Dec. 7, and Red Wing (No. 2, Class A) on Tuesday, Dec. 11, before traveling to Northfield on Thursday, Dec. 13.

Trojans 3, Stars 1 New Prague outshot Holy Angels 12-3 in the first period, but it wasn’t until 18 seconds were left on the clock that they scored on a goal by Dani Kocina, with assists by Catie Skaja and Lindsay Paschke.

That goal held up until the third period. Skaja made it a 2-0 game, with Kocina and Paschke getting assists. Holy Angels scored a goal with less than a minute remaining, but the Trojans got it back just 10 seconds later when Paschke scored, from Skaja and Kocina.

New Prague outshot the Stars 45-15, with Sophie Puente making 14 saves for the win.

Trojans 6, Dragons 2 New Prague took a 2-0 lead over Litchfield/Dassel- Cokato, then held off a pesky Dragon squad on their way to a 6-2 win.

Brittany Sticha had a hat trick, while Skaja, Paschke and Kasey Marquardt added goals. Assists were from Taylor Heid, Kocina, Skaja, Jordan Anderson and Marquardt.

Sydney Culshaw picked up her first varsity win in goal, stopping 15 of 17 shots.
