Girls win two on the road

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team entered the Christmas break on a roll, with a four-game winning streak after claiming a pair of non-conference games on the road last week.

Playing on back-to-back nights, the Trojans defeated Mankato West and Jordan to up their season record to 8-2. New Prague (No. 3, Class AAA) will take a holiday break and return to action Friday, Jan. 4, with a Missota Conference game at Northfield.

Trojans 60, Scarlets 39 New Prague broke open a close game by outscoring Mankato West 30-15 in the second half on their way to a 60-39 win in Mankato.

Senior Steph Hanson led the Trojans with 15 points, while Lexi Ruehling added 14. Other Trojans scoring were Jess Allar (9), Maize Deihl (7), Annie Dittberner and Ella Grote (6 each), Rachel Haecherl (2) and MacKenzie Trewartha (1).

Grote had a solid game. She led the Trojans with eight rebounds and four assists, while adding two steals. Hanson also had four assists and a team-high five steals, while Ruehling had four steals.

The Trojan defense forced 32 turnovers by the Scarlets.

Trojans 55, Jaguars 46 Playing their second game in as many nights, the Trojans appeared sluggish and were cold shooting at the start, allowing Jordan to jump to a 13-0 lead. But New Prague again used a smothering defense and came back to defeat the Jaguars 55-46.

The Trojans fought back from their slow start to take a two-point lead into the locker room at halftime. However the Jaguars kept making things tough and led by as many as five points in the second half before the Trojans made their final run.

New Prague had four players in double figures. Ruehling and Dittberner had 12 points each, while Hanson and Allar each had 11. Also scoring for New Prague were Deihl (5), and Haecherl and Grote (2 each).

New Prague forced 26 turnovers, with Hanson and Dittberner each netting four steals and three assists. Ruehling had 11 rebounds to lead the Trojans.
