Glisczinskis are Scott County's Farm Family of the Year

The Ken and Linda Glisczinski family of rural New Prague will be honored Thursday, Aug. 3, as Scott County's Farm Family of the year.

They are one of 56 families from around the state-one from each participating county-to receive the honor. Winning families will be officially recognized in a ceremony at the 25th Annual Farmfest in Redwood County.

The families were chosen based on their contributions to the agricultural industry, their communities and the state. Families receiving honors have demonstrated a commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture and agriculture production.

The Glisczinskis and their three children, Scott, Elizabeth and Sara, live on a 300-acre dairy farm northeast of New Prague in Helena Township. They also rent another 80 acres. They have 300 head of cattle, and milk about 120 of them at any one time. They also grow corn, alfalfa, beans and other grains, all of which is used to feed the cattle.

They are open to new ideas on the farm, and recently built a new barn, featuring a compost bedding pack and drive-by feeding. It not only is economical, but it also has a step-up parlor that cuts hours off of their milking time, Ken said.

They also participate in Soil and Water Conservation District programs and use no BST, a synthetic hormone, in their cattle.

I don't believe in it
