Gunderson to take 1-year leave as coach

There will be some changes coming to the New Prague High School girls basketball program next year.
Coach Ron Gunderson has requested a one-year leave of absence for the 2017-18 school year, Activities Director Brad Skogerboe said Thursday, April 20.
In addition, two of his assistant coaches, Mike Tschimperle and Jeremy Biermeier have resigned and another assistant, Hannah Strop, also asked for a one-year leave.
Gunderson has been head coach for more than 40 years. He came to the school district in the 1975-76 school year and became head girls basketball coach the following year. He taught middle school science for 41 years, retiring a year ago. He is the third-winningest coach in Minnesota girls basketball history, with 684 career wins, eight state tournament trips and one state championship, the 2000 Class AAA title. He has 15 20-win seasons and only eight losing seasons.
Skogerboe is now looking for head coaches in four sports for the 2017-18 school year - football, girls hockey, girls basketball and dance team. A fifth opening, boys soccer - was filled when New Prague hired Gospel Kordah last month.
