Gymnasts peaking at right time

Saving their best for last, the New Prague Trojan gymnastics team produced its first 140-point score of the season Friday, Jan. 29, defeating Annandale in the final regular season meet of the season.

The Trojans scored 140.175 points in the home meet, easily distancing the visiting Cardinals, who had a score of 127.975.

The Trojans will now turn their attention to the Section 2AA meet, which they will host on Friday, Feb. 12, beginning at 5 p.m. This is the Trojan's first foray into Class AA in nearly 30 years, but the Trojans have had success at that level, qualifying for the AA tournament three times in the 1980s, including a state championship in 1984.

Things won't come easy for the Trojans, though. Three teams in the section are ranked in the top 25 in state (Lakeville North - 8th, Bloomington Jefferson - 12th, and Lakeville South - 15th).

Trojans 140.175, Cardinals 127.975 "This was by far the team's best meet of the year," Coach Doug Amundsen said after the meet. "The girls had fun, but they were more focused when they needed to be. They competed with confidence, and it showed in the scores."

Senior Breanna Ellanson claimed first in the all-around in the senior night event with a score of 36.425. She placed first on vault (9.05), and bars (9.25) and was second on beam (9.1) and floor (9.025).

Kaylynn Solheid had two firsts, on beam (9.425) and floor (9.25) and was second on bars (8.7). She placed second in the all-around with a season-high 35.9.
