Gymnasts will host Farmington Friday

The New Prague High School gymnastics team will host Farmington Friday in their season-opener.

The meet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the New Prague Gymnastics Center. While many teams have already had one or two meets, the Trojans are getting off to a late start this season. The team lost heavily to graduation, and the extra time has given coach Matt Shetka the opportunity to help his young athletes perfect their routines.

The Trojans have qualified for the last seven state Class A meets, but graduated most of their varsity squad after last season. This year’s squad returns seven of their 20 varsity routines from last year’s state meet. Junior Melanie Deutsch, who competed in all four events at last year’s state meet, and sophomore Brittany Ellanson, who competed in three events in the team meet. Several other Trojans have varsity experience, having filled in for injuries over the last couple of years.

Deutsch placed eighth in the all-around competition last season and was third in the floor exercise. The Trojans will be looking at her to provide the leadership they’ll need as they work toward an eighth-straight state tourney appearance.

New Prague will host Mound-Westonka on Tuesday, Dec. 20, and travel to Red Wing Thursday, Dec. 22, before taking a break for Christmas. They’ll return to action Thursday, Jan. 5, at Faribault.
