High school Spanish Club takes first trip to Spain

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

New Prague High School Spanish teacher Kari Schroeder and six of her students spent part of their summer in an intensive study of the Spanish language. They did it while visiting Spain.

Schroeder and her students were the first members of the high school's Spanish Club to visit different cities in the European country from June 11-29. The students who went were Breonna Gareis, daughter of Jim and Candace Gareis of New Prague; Hannah Mayer, daughter of Jeffrey and Susan Mayer of Webster; Jenna Pexa, daughter of Randy and Diane Pexa of New Prague; Rachel Rezac, daughter of Lawrence and Sandra Rezac of New Prague; Bryn VanHoomissen, daughter of Matthew and Peggy VanHoomissen of New Prague and Jenna Weber, daughter of Robert and Anita Fossen of New Prague. Weber and VanHoomissen are 2006 NPHS graduates and the other four girls will be seniors this fall.

To prepare for the trip Schroeder compared the different companies that offer travel for students. She chose Ceta Tours in Wisconsin. Next was a meeting with students to find out if any were interested. Schroeder also had a meeting with parents to go over what students would need, such as passports, and what they could expect on the trip. Originally, 10 to 15 students wanted to go, but for a variety of reasons that number dropped to six.

For a first trip I thought six was a good number to start out with
