Historical Society helps us recall our roots

By Chuck Kajer

New Prague has a strong sense of community.

If we didn't already know it, we learned a lot about that sense of community during the recent Sesquicentennial celebration. There were lots of people who took an interest in New Prague's past.

Many of today's residents are interested in learning not only where we are as a city, but how we got there. And there is an organization in New Prague that has made it its mission to preserve the stories of how the community has evolved.

The New Prague Area Historical Society, founded in 1983, has as its mission the collection, recording, preservation and dissemination of knowledge about the history of the New Prague area and to relate it to the history of the State of Minnesota, according to its website (novapraha.org). Many people saw the fruits of those efforts during the recent celebration. The organization maintains a photo collection at the New Prague library, and has a card file there for people to use when doing genealogical research, along with gathering information about the community's past. A new project being considered is an oral history project, where they will chronicle the recollections of many long-time residents so that their stories will live on long after they are gone. The Society always welcomes new members.

There is an old saying that if you don't know where you are coming from, you don't know where you are going. New Prague is lucky to have an organization of volunteers that helps us remember where we've come from. It is that knowledge that will help us as we, as a community, plan for our future.
