Irish surge into second with 4 wins

The St. Patrick Irish won four games in five days to surge to within a half game of first place New Market in the Dakota-Rice-Scott Baseball League last week. Previously unbeaten Faribault dropped two straight games to fall in to third place. Montgomery picked up two wins, while New Prague, St. Benedict and Veseli also tallied wins. The weather claimed three games from last week’s schedule . New Market and Elko were idle last week while cohosting a tournament.

Wednesday, June 1 Irish 6, Mudcats 1 Josh Simon was brilliant on the mound for St. Patrick, pitching the complete game and scattering six hits, en route to a 6-1 Irish win in Prior Lake. The Mudcats' only run came in the fourth inning when Tony Lohrer hit a solo home run to left field. St. Patrick scored twice both in the first and second innings and would tack on single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. The Irish were led offensively by Mathew Pexa, who had two hits and Augie Isaacson who scored three times.

Thursday, June 2 Irish 15, Bulldogs 9 In a game which lasted over three hours, saw 24 runs, 22 hits, 16 walks, seven hit batters, and six errors, St. Patrick outlasted Union hill by the score of 15-9. Danny DeGross was the winning pitcher when all was said and done. Offensive highlights were a grand slam by Adam Gill of Union Hill, and home runs by Derek Hahn, Augie Isaacson, and Seth Ambroz. Mathew Pexa and Jordan Goracke each had three hits.

Friday June 3 Mallards 7, Sox 4 Montgomery overcame an early deficit and a brief rain delay to beat Webster 7-4. Jared Schloesser went 7-2/3 innings for the win, allowing one earned run and striking out 10 batters. Mike Flicek worked the final 1-1/3 for the save. A balanced offensive attack was led by a Tyler Bednar home run and multiple hit games from Aaron Dwyer, Ryan Iverson and Jaron Christensen.

Saturday, June 4 Irish 3, Lakers 1 Seth Ambroz and Matt Lane locked up in a tightlymatched pitching duel on Saturday night. An unearned run opened the scoring in the second when an errant throw allowed Derek Hahn to score. That score would hold until the Irish struck in the eighth. Derrick Isaacson led off with a double to left. Then, with two out, Mathew Pexa singled to center to score Isaacson. St. Patrick tacked on a third run in the ninth when Seth Ambroz led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, AJ Chappuis singled to right to score Ambroz and moved to second on the throw home. Derrick Isaacson singled, but on the play, Chappuis was gunned down at the plate to end the threat. Faribault scored quickly in the ninth, with one out, Carter Sartor singled and Matt Lane doubled to score Sartor. An error and a strikeout left the Lakers with bases loaded and two out, but Ambroz was able to get a strikeout to seal the win.

Sunday, June 5 Orioles 8, Mudcats 2 The Orioles topped the Mudcats on the road behind a strong pitching performance by Joel Zimmermann. The Orioles pounded out 10 hits and collected seven walks on their way to eight runs. Austin Bachman scored twice, once in the first on an error and again in the third. Also in the third Dan Novak would drive in Zack Dubanoski with a single. Prior Lake kept up the attack by answering back in the first with Levi Schneider getting a hit and later scoring on an error. They would add one more in the sixth when Jon Huston scored on a fielder’s choice. The Orioles picked up three more runs of their own in the sixth when they started the inning with three singles in a row by Novak, Aaron Kes and Ben Buthe. Teddy Nytes would contribute an RBI single and Bachman would also add a sacrifice fly. The Orioles would tack on two more in the ninth with an RBI Double from James Fuerniss that scored Jake Klein and Aaron Shetka. Fuerniss was 3-for-5 on the day with three RBIs. Dust Steinhoff pitched the ninth to slam the door shut. Jon Houston started the game for the Mudcats and collected the loss. Warriors 18, Sox 6 Veseli hit three home runs in the bottom of the first to set the tone for an 18-6 win over Webster. Matt Perkinson had an RBI single scoring Brett Kriha and Cody Shimota. Ben Doerr hit a grand slam, Nolan Hodapp hit a double scoring on a Mike Bartusek home run. Curt Brezina hit a solo shot. Veseli added two more in the second on RBI singles by Shimota and Tyler Busch. Webster scored two runs in the third on a double by Brett Hoffman. Webster added one in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning. Nate Nielsen and Jason Nelson also had hits for Webster. Veseli tacked on six more in the sixth with hits from Jordan Chlan, Nate Novak and Jack Meyer. Hunter Solheid took the loss for Webster. Curt Brezina picked up the win for Veseli pitching five innings and Perkinson pitched the last two innings in relief.

Saints 5, Lakers 4 The St. Benedict Saints defeated the Faribault Lakers 5- 4 in 10 innings Sunday. Michael Pauly hit a first pitch walkoff home run in the bottom of the 10th for the victory. St. Benedict scored once each in the eighth and ninth innings to force extras. Mitchell Martin also homered for the Saints. Faribault hit three home runs as well, Two by Joey Grote and one by Evan Jensen. Jack Helgeson went the distance for the Lakers. Derek Karsky picked up the win for the Saints. He relieved Matthias Duevel and Pauly.

Mallards 6, Bulldogs 1 Jaron Christensen pitched 7 strong innings without giving up an earned run for the win as Montgomery defeated Union Hill 6-1. John Krocak pitched the final two innings, striking out four for the save. Offense was hard to come by for both teams as the wind was blowing in from center field extremely hard. Ryan Iverson led the Mallards with two hits including a very impressive home run considering the windy conditions. He had three RBIs. Tom Flicek had three hits while Mike Flicek had two hits including a double.

Irish 5, Coyotes 4 Adam Pauly led off the game with a single, stole second and was doubled home by Zac Hoffman and the Coyotes had an early lead. That score held until the bottom of the sixth when Mathew Pexa singled and Matt Ambroz doubled to start the inning. Pexa scored to tie the game on a ground out by Josh Simon, but could not push another run across in the frame. The Coyotes immediately struck back with two runs. Hits by Logan Becker, Zac Hoffman and Andy Johnson, scored a run and an error would score another making the score 3-1. The Irish scored an unearned run in the seventh, making the score 3-2. The score would become 4-2 when Matt Theis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the ninth, a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt put Irish runners on 2nd and 3rd, with one out. After a strikeout, on a 1-2 count, Augie Isaacson doubled to tie the game and force extra innings. In the 11th, Derrick Isaacson led off with a single. Jordan Goracke walked and Augie Isaacson advanced the runners a base. The Coyotes walked Mathew Pexa intentionally, and Matt Ambroz hit a fly ball to centerfield, deep enough to score Derrick Isaacson, capping a 5-4 win.
