It’s county fair time

Starting in mid-July, residents of this area have a chance to experience some of the best of rural life... the county fair.

The Rice County Fair started Tuesday in Faribault and runs through this Sunday. Starting next week, on Wednesday, July 24, the Scott County Fair begins its five-day run in Jordan. And next month, the Le Sueur County Fair will hold its four-day celebration in Le Center.

The county fair has a unique place in American culture. Youngsters and adults alike spend countless hours preparing their produce, baked goods, animals or other entries in pursuit of that elusive ribbon. The fair gives youngsters a chance to demonstrate what they have learned as 4-H’ers over the past year, and also gives them the opportunity to meet kids from other parts of the county that share the same interests.

There will be motorcycle races, tractor pulls, music, carnival rides and countless demonstrations for fairgoers, not to mention the staple of county fairs... the demolition derby.

And of course, don’t forget the food. There are lots of delicacies to choose from, and most people have their favorites, whether it’s a malt from the 4-H or Dairy Association booths or a pork burger from the pork producers’ booth.

We encourage you to go to one, two or all three of the area county fairs. The price is right - it’s a short drive and there’s lots of fun for everyone.
