John MacDougall, 87

LTC John MacDougall, age 87, died peacefully on Monday, November 13, 2017 in Mankato, MN. A Gathering of Family and Friends was held from 1:30 p.m.– 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Starkson & Steffel Funeral Home ~ McRaith Chapel of Waseca. A Private Family Interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the MacDougall McCallum Heritage Foundation (MMHF)  (2311 Kennedy Drive, Faribault, MN 55021) or Military Organization of Donor’s Choice. LTC (Ret) John Bollum MacDougall (a very proud Scotsman) was born on October 17, 1930 to Gilbert and Edith (Bollum) MacDougall in Redwood Falls, MN.  He  graduated in 1948 from Redwood Falls High School playing in band, chorus, football, basketball, and serving on the Student Council.  He served in the United States Army for 25 years, retiring in 1973.  While in the Army, he served in the Korean conflict (where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart) and Vietnam. He received many medals, some of them include: Silver Star for gallantry,  The Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Badge, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Chung Mu Distinguished Military Service Medal (Korea) and the Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st Class). He married Isabelle Weisweaver at Ft. Knox, KY in 1958, they were married for 19 years, and together they had 3 children. While married, they lived at many Army bases, both International and Stateside. Upon retirement they settled back in Redwood Falls in 1975, where he served as the county’s Probation Officer.  He later married Paula Herrick and they lived in Elysian, MN.  In his free time, John loved woodworking, (building many decks with his friends in Grandpa’s Inc.), owning race horses with his friends, and working in his gardens. He is survived by his three children: Alec (Theresa) of White Bear Lake, Edith (Jeffrey) Anderson of Faribault, and Eric (Morgynne) of Cannon Falls; 9 doting granddaughters and 4 great-grandsons; 2 sisters: Margaret Carasik of Stillwater and Mary Brown of Green Valley, AZ; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends; his three stepchildren and 11 stepgrandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Ruth McCartin & Isabel Board, and wife Paula.
