Just foolin'

It's THAT day, again. You know, that special day of the year. The one where you are on edge and extra cautious all day long, because if you let your guard down, you just might fall victim to someone's practical joke or prank.

According to Wikipedia, the custom of April Fools' Day and playing harmless pranks is recognized everywhere and has been for centuries. The first reported association between April 1 and foolishness dates back to 1392 in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.

Wikipedia also states that customs for this day of fun and foolishness vary from country to country. For instance, in Nordic countries, many news media outlets publish a false story on April 1, typically a non-headline, front-page article. The same type of hoax is carried out in Poland, involving many people, media, even public institutions. However, they do usually avoid serious activities.

Over the years, some elaborate jokes and hoaxes have been carried out by broadcast and print media, was well as by large businesses. Today, with so much information at our fingertips with the Internet, social media and global news services, a wider audience than ever before can fall victim to this April foolishness. Since information on the web never goes away and seems to keep resurfacing and being re-posted, the hoax carries long beyond a single April Fools' Day. It proves an important point: just because it appears somewhere on the internet, doesn't mean it is true!

Dreams can fool with you, too. Recently, after an evening of number crunching for a predicted tough year at current crop prices, I dreamt that I was being offered a $100,000 per year job. Just then, the alarm went off, and I immediately awoke, not remembering where I was in the dream or who was offering the job.

Then, the other night, I dreamt that I woke up on Friday morning, April 1, to a big announcement. The announcement was that the occurrences of the past several months have all been a big joke, just foolin' with us. The morning's news headlines read, "Real 2016 presidential candidates revealed". From the newly revealed, short list, there was at least one well-rounded, fully qualified, high-integrity candidate, with the know-how, personal skills, traits and well-defined, reasonable, workable and affordable plan to lead our nation in a troubled world with a rapidly growing population, while diminishing a mountain of debt.

As I said, dreams can fool with you, too. But, on this one, I am holding to the hope that dreams can come true.
