Le Sueur Co. sets 2011 levy hearing

By Jake Keohen, Montgomery Messenger

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners set the date and time for a special Truth-In-Taxation Public Hearing for adoption of the 2011 tax levy during the regular meeting held Tuesday, Sept. 7. The budget and levy will be adopted following the public hearing, unless a continuation hearing is necessary.

The commissioners set the preliminary 2011 tax levy increase at 1.08 percent during their meeting the previous week. The levy cannot be increased beyond that number, but could be decreased.

The hearing is set for Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 6:35 p.m., in the commissioners' room at the courthouse. According to the Minnesota Revenue Department, the hearing may be part of a regularly scheduled meeting, but must occur after 6 p.m. The county board will convene a regular meeting at 5:30 p.m.

The board also:

• Approved Emergency Management Director Ann Traxler's recommendation to appoint Tammy Stewig and Pam Voight as assistant managers, and request for funds to participate in training for dealing with ammonia leaks to be held at Gustavus College. A grant may be available to cover the cost.

• Approved request by Roxanne Braun-Billings to telecommute two days per week in her human services position.

• Voted 3-2 giving Environmental Specialist Lauren Klement permission to apply for a grant to be used for septic inventory at German/Jefferson Lakes. Klement said price of an upgraded system can be used as in-kind match to offset costs. Planning and Zoning Director Kathy Brockway said there are 800-plus homes around the lakes, with about half being in septic compliance. Commissioner Culhane said he will not support county funding of $100,000 for the project, since the zoning ordinance is working
