Le Sueur County Board acts on conditional use permits

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners acted on four applications for planning commission conditional use permits (CUP's) during its Tuesday, Aug. 25 meeting at the courthouse in Le Center.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Kathy Brockway presented these items:

-John Bendzick, New Prague (applicant/owner), to amend an existing CUP for a Level 2 Home Occupation to operate an agriculture machinery sales and service business in an Ag District of Lanesburgh Township. Approved 4-0 (Commissioner Doherty absent).

-OMG Midwest DBA Southern Minnesota Construction Co., Mankato (applicant/owner), a CUP to allow mineral extraction of 50 acres in a Conservancy District of Kasota Township. Planning commission recommended tabling application for a mandatory EAW. Approved 4-0.

-Mankato Landshapes, Mankato (applicant), Gwen Thompson, Madison Lake (owner), an after-the-fact CUP to allow grading and filling of approximately 198 cubic yards of material in a Rec Residential District of Kasota Township. Approved 4-0.

-The Landing at Jefferson Lakes Home Owners Association, Cleveland (applicant/owner), a CUP to allow grading and filling of approximately 68 cubic yards of material in a Rec Residential District of Cleveland Township. Approved 4-0.

Also Tuesday:

• Barbara Ronningen of the MN State Demographic Center in St. Paul discussed the upcoming 2010 census. Official date for the census is April 1, with questionnaires to be mailed in March.

• Grey Lusty of the UNIMIN Corp. presented the annual report and bonding agreements for the Ottawa and Kasota mining operations. Shipments from Ottawa were up 6 percent in 2008, but business has decreased in 2009 due to the economy. The bond for Ottawa is $1.5 million in 2009. Lusty also presented the eighth annual $7,500 donation to the historical society for projects in Ottawa. Shipments from the Kasota mine were up 3 percent in 2008 and have fallen off in 2009. The Kasota bond is $1.3 million for 2009.

• Nick Cesafsky was hired as a part-time jailer/ dispatcher in the sheriff's office.

• Public Health Director Cindy Shaughnessy presented the home and community based waiver services contract for board approval. She also reported on the very successful flu clinic held at Seneca Foods in Montgomery. Discussing the upcoming flu season, she said they will be starting regular vaccine clinics soon, and will follow with H1N1 clinics once the vaccine has been approved, possibly mid-October.

• The board approved a resolution withholding all funding from the Le Sueur County Historical Society until issues of an operating agreement, reorganization under a new business model and disposition of a lawsuit are settled, and the board is satisfied with a new centralization plan.
