Le Sueur County voters deserve a choice

Things must be going well in Le Sueur County.

The filing period for county commissioner passed last week, and the two seats up for elections — the First District seat held by Terry Hayes of Montgomery and the Third District seat held by Joe Doherty of Le Sueur, saw no one challenging the incumbents.

That means either everyone is happy with the way county government is running, or no one cares to take the time to file against the incumbent.

Both of these seats lie in the northern-most parts of the county. Because they are in the north, they are growing fast. New Prague and Montgomery, in particular, are experiencing large housing booms, and decisions being made at all levels of local government — including the county level — will have important repercussions for years to come.

In Scott County, there are races in both districts that are up for election, including a three-way primary in District 2. In Rice County, where all five seats are up for election, there are many candidates lined up for a chance to shape the future of that county.

This is not to say that Hayes and Doherty are not up to the task. Both have done a fine job representing their constituents. There are plenty of good reasons to vote for them. But government works best when there is an exchange of ideas, when voters are presented with options and are asked to make a choice as to which candidate has the better credentials.

It appears voters in Le Sueur County won't get to make that choice this year.

And that is too bad.
