Legion team gets first two wins

The New Prague Post 45 American Legion baseball team finally got into the win column last week, winning a league game against Chaska and winning one of three games in a tournament in Cologne.

The team is now 2-6 on the season. They were scheduled to host Mankato National (West) in a doubleheader Wedneday, June 29, then after a week off for the Fourth of July holiday, they will host Hastings in an 8 p.m. game on Wednesday, July 6.

New Prague 2, Chaska 1 Bridger Hahn pitched a complete game, needing just 68 pitches to defeat Chaska 2-1 Thursday, June 23. Hahn scattered six hits and struck out three. The lone run came in the seventh inning on a pair of hits and an error. Hahn also got the offense going with a leadoff single in the first. Brady O’Neill also singled and Russ Bartyzal walked to load the bases. Hahn scored on a fielder’s choice by Jack Becker. New Prague got an insurance run, which they would need, in the top of the seventh. Luke Zweber doubled, was sacrificed to third and came home to score. O’Neill had two of New Prague’s four hits in the game.

Cologne 10, New Prague 5 New Prague opened the Cologne tournament with a game against the host team and lost a by a 10-5 score Friday, June 24. Cologne led 8-0 before New Prague scored a run in the fifth inning. They added four more in the fifth to make it a 9-5 game, with five singles, but that would be as close as they would get. Jacob Mader had two hits and two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly. Becker started and pitched three innings to take the loss.

New Prague 8, Spring Lake Park 7 New Prague scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead as they defeated Spring Lake Park 8-7 Saturday, June 25. Two hit batters and a single by Zweber brought in one run, then Matt Schmitz tripled to bring in two more. Cal Bartyzal followed with a sacrifice fly. Spring Lake Park tied it in the fifth, but New Prague scored three in the bottom of the inning. O’Neill singled and stole second, Becker was hit by a pitch and Carter Seymour walked to load the bases. Forberg hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run and Zweber tripled to score two more. Spring Lake Park scored two in the fifth to make it a one-run game, but Colton Devine led off the sixth with a hit and scored on a Sherman double to make it 8-6 New Prague. Spring Lake Park scored one in the seventh, but came up a run short. Forberg started the game and pitched four-plus innings to take the win. Jack Krouse and Mader pitched in relief, with Mader getting a save. Zweber had three hits and ONeill two for Post 45.

Buffalo 10, New Prague 2 Post 45 played their second game on a hot, steamy Saturday with little depth in pitching, and Buffalo hit the New Prague bullpen hard in a 10-2 win over New Prague. New Prague took an early lead when O’Neill singled and scored on a fielder’s choice in the first inning. But things fell apart for New Prague in the fifth when they gave up three runs, then allowed one more in the sixth and six in the seventh. Noah Wicklander started and went four innings. Devine took the loss in relief. New Prague added one more run on an RBI single by Mader in the seventh. O’Neill had two hits for New Prague.

Shakopee 11, New Prague 1 Post 45 returned to District action and lost an 11-1 contest at Shakopee Monday, June 27. Shakopee scored in each of four innings as the game ended on the 10-run rule. Schmitz took the loss. Post 45 got its only run in the third when Logan Reger was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a hit by Zweber.
