Leo F. Greer, 85

Leo F. Greer, 85, of Montgomery, formerly of Kilkenny, died on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at the Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Louis Park, after complications from abdominal surgery.

Born in Kilkenny on April 5, 1919, Leo Francis Greer was a son of James J. and Margaret (Hagerty) Greer. He attended St. Canice Parochial School, Le Center High School and the University of Minnesota Farm School. In 1939 he purchased the family farm, which had been homesteaded by his great-grandparents in the 1860s. He married Ellen Loula on November 16, 1940 in Montgomery. After their marriage he and Ellen moved to the farm where he farmed until his retirement in the late 1980s. He was also a trucker for Green Giant Co. in his later years. The couple moved to Montgomery in 1997. Leo enjoyed his family, friends, golf, playing cards, was a huge sports fan and an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife Ellen of 63 years; three daughters, Pat (Roger) Poette, Amherst, NY, Karen Greer, Minnetonka, and Susan (John) Flohrs, Savage; two sons, James (Sherrie) Greer, Burnsville and John Greer and Cathy Mitchell, Albany; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Germaine (Conway) Perry of Oregon, and a brother, Gerald Greer of Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Canice Catholic Church in Kilkenny, with Rev. Kevin Finnegan and Bishop Paul Dudley officiating at the Mass of the Resurrection. Interment will be held at a later date at Calvary Cemetery, Kilkenny. Casketbearers were James Hackett, Paul Hruska, Raymond Bud Miller, Bill Hix, Orrin Retka and Don Jasan. Honorary casketbearers were Gene Claffey, Ken Balfe, Charlie Tritz and Bill Hanek.

Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at the Keohen Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery, and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Canice Church or the Calvary Cemetery Association.
