Local anglers catch monstrous muskies

Gene Schmid of New Prague and his sons Eric and Phil took what they call their annual birthday trip to Leech Lake from October 10 to 12, where they caught two huge muskies.

Both monstrous fish were caught and released on October 11. The trio began the morning at Kabekona Bay of Leech Lake. The first musky was 39 inches long and weighed 15 pounds, and was caught in about six feet of water in weeds. Schmid said the fish put up a pretty good fight.

In the afternoon they went to the Grandview Flats and West Goose Bay Flats where Schmid tried his luck with the White Magnum lure he bought at World Wide Sports in Islamorada FL. This time they landed a 47-inch musky that weighed 25 pounds. This fish was caught in about 11 feet of water and weeds. After measuring and weighing it, they removed the lure and let it go to make some other angler's day.

The three went out the morning of October 12 and headed for home later that day.
