Look to the future, remember the past

By Chuck Kajer

In case you haven’t noticed, New Prague is planning a celebration this weekend.

One hundred-fifty years ago, a small group of Czechs and one German homesteaded an area in the “Big Woods.” These settlers found a land rich in resources and opportunity. They endured hardships and losses. Other settlers followed, helping the young settlement grow into a village.

One can’t help but wonder what the original settlers would think if they could see what New Prague has become. Could they have envisioned a city of more than 6,000 people?

New Prague is a progressive, growing community that is home to people of many different ethnic backgrounds. We look to the future, to the growth and opportunities that await us. Still, we remember the past. We work to keep the traditions of our ancestors and this weekend we will pay tribute to them and the sacrifices they made as this community has grown.

To all residents, be proud of your community. To all who are returning this weekend, welcome back and enjoy this opportunity to reminisce. To newcomers and other visitors, enjoy our celebration.
